Islamic State: Current Status

These may be the ultimate goals of Islamic State but in the meantime it concentrates on the Arab, Sunni-majority areas of Iraq and Syria and, to a lesser extent, Libya.

Its efforts are focused on winning the allegiance of the Sunni Muslims in lands it has conquered areas and ending the rule over them of Shia governments that it sees as non-Muslim, such as those in Baghdad and Damascus.

More recently, however, it has become preoccupied with just holding its shrinking territory against massive and sustained military assaults by a loose coalition of formal and informal local and foreign forces. The loss of Dabiq in October 2016 was major symbolic blow to Islamic State’s mystical Doomsday agenda but certainly enough to dissuade its core leaders from fighting.
